Deutsche-Polizei WWII Handcuffs
Manufacturer: Deutsche Polizei
These are double-locking swing-through handcuffs, designed with a mechanism where the key turns one way to unlock (and release the double lock) and the opposite way to engage the double lock. Two variations exist: one with both keyholes on the same side and another with keyholes on opposite sides.
Each cuff is engraved with Schutzmarke “Deutsche Polizei”, along with the words ZU (lock) and AUF (unlock), indicating the direction to turn the key. The word Schutzmarke translates to “registered trademark,” a term only adopted after 1950 when markings containing Deutsches Reich were eliminated.
Earlier versions of the same cuffs are marked D.R. PAT. (Deutsches Reich Patent), dating them between 1911 and 1950. These versions were likely used by the German police during World War II.
